Broadening faculty and senior staff members' understanding of the university, including its mission, governance, priorities, and internal and external relations.

Participants

Twenty faculty and senior staff members are nominated and selected annually to serve as a Fellow for two years. These individuals:

  • Demonstrate excellence in their current position
  • Have the potential for future contributions to the university
  • Represent diversity in thoughts, experience, demographics, and roles

Selection & Eligibility

Participants are traditionally nominated by the most senior leader within their school or unit in partnership with their local human resources representative, and approved by the President and Provost.

Nominees should hold senior level positions at the Dean, Vice President or Vice Provost level, or report to someone at that level.

Faculty nominees should also be members of the Academic Council who show promise of being not only distinguished scholars, but also academic statespersons interested in contributing to the well-being of the university.

Program Format

Stanford Fellows meet for seven dinners held throughout the academic year to discuss topics of interest with guest speakers invited from within the university.

Each session is co-led by at least two Fellows within the program who facilitate the conversation and interaction with the guests. The program is managed by the Talent Management and Workforce Strategy team within University Human Resources.

Program History

The Stanford Fellows Program originated in 1969, when Professor Herbert Packer first established the University Fellows Program. Since its founding, over 350 faculty and administrators have served as Fellows.
